Why Front Mount Over Top Mount An 80 Series top mount intercooler sits in the engine bay, close to the manifold. It's simpler to fit and generally cheaper, which is why many owners start there. The trade-off is airflow sitting in the engine bay means it's exposed to hot ambient air rather than a constant stream of fresh air, so temperatures can climb quickly under sustained load.
